Dynamic and Static Characters

Think about the main characters in Much Ado About Nothing: Beatrice, Benedick, Hero, Claudio, Don John, and Don Pedro.  Write two well-developed paragraphs discussing the static and dynamic characters.  Write one paragraph about the characters who are static and one about those who are dynamic.  Be sure to use examples showing how they are static or dynamic. This is due by class time Thursday, September 22.

  1. Throughout the play the main characters that are dynamic, or changing characters, are usually changed through love. As Mr. Leyba says, "This is a touching, healing story about the power of love." Beatrice and Benedick hate one another at the start of the story, it's entertaining for them to insult each other. But as Don Pedro, the Prince, interfers with their lives and tries, and succeeds, to get them to fall for each other. At the end of the play they are happily married and Beatrice is no longer making snide comments about the type of guy she will marry and Benedict is no longer making promises to be a bachelor for the rest of his days. They change "together" throughout the story similar to other characters. Hero cahnges from a young women who always follows her father's orders to someone who is slightly more indepdent. She has intentions of following Claudio's orders by the end of the play because he's the guy she wants to marry. Although her personality is the same throughout the story:innocent, she wants to marry Claudio because she loves him by the time of their first disasterous wedding.

Unfortunately, for Hero her husband, Claudio, is the same love-struck sap from the beginning. From his love at first site with Hero to their wedding in the end he's the same person. He's continuously infatuated with this innocent girl and always tends to say sappy things. Don Pedro, the Prince, doesn't change either. He brought Beatrice and Benedick together but he never evolved with them. He's a love-maker from the start. His illigitimate brother, Don John, doesn't evolve either. He is filled with hate from the beginning of the story til the end. His face doesn't change he's so static.
(Sorry if this is wrong, but i wouldn't follow my opinions exactly.)

  2. A dynamic character is described as a character in a story that changes and in the shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing. One of the best character that is dynamic was Beatrice. Beatrice always complained that there would be no man that would be good for her. At the end of the movie Beatrice marries Benedict after confessing her affection towards Benedict. Speaking of Benedict he also had a change in the same way. He didnt seem to have much affection but that changed quickly at the party when Benedict and Beatrice meet for the first time. As some characters in a story make significant changes, there are some characters that dont change at all.

The characters that dont change, either in personallity or how they feel about someone else, are called static characters. Hero is a great example of a static character. In the beginning of the movie, when she saw Claudio, she fell in love almost instantly. Their was a rocky part of this because Claudio thought Hero was unfaithful but I dont think her feelings towards Claudio changed. Claudio is almost the same way. Don John, the illigitimate brother of the prince, was an evil static character. All through the story he was trying to break up Claudio and Hero because he also liked Hero. He almost succeeded, with the help of Borachio, but in the end he was caught and tortured. Static characters are more common than dynamic characters but both are necessary to make a decent story.

  5. Static characters are those who are unchanging and do not grow throughout the story. Many of the characters in Much Ado Without Nothing fit into this category. Don John is a static character because he remains evil from beginning to end. His driving force in life is vengeance because he was born as an illegitimate child. He constantly seeks to ruin the lives of others just as his life has been ruined. His brother, Don Pedro, is also an unchanging character. He acts only as a matchmaker and voice of reason to lovers. His main focus is to bring people together and find their soulmate. He does this twice, first with Claudio and Hero then with Beatrice and Benedick. Claudio and Hero also never grow as characters. They fall in love immediately and remain that way even through scandal. They are love-struck and doe-eyed throught the play. These static characters make no major changes and remain the same during the story.

Dynamic characters are those who change and evolve over the cousre of the story. Beatrice and Benedick are prime examples of dynamic characters in Much Ado Without Nothing. Beatrice begins a a woman who swears no man is good enough to marry. Benedick is at first a whitty and clever man who cannot seem to find a good woman. Upon encountering eachother the two banter and spit innuendos at eachother every chance they get. They later realize that they are perfect for eachother and secretly confess their feelings. By the end of the play they have fallen in love and are happily married. They each made a complete change from beginning to end and grew together. Clearly dynamic characters change to be completely opposite from what they were when the story began.

  6. In Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice and Benedick are both dynamic characters. In the beginning of the play, they insult each other and constantly try to out-wit each other. Beatrice refuses to marry because she says she has not found the perfect man. Similarly, Benedick vows he will never marry either. Then Beatrice hears that Benedick has feelings for her, which opens her up to love. Benedick's attitude towards love and marriage change throughout the play as he falls more and more for her. Eventually the two fall in love with each other. At the end of the story, Beatrice and Benedick marry each other, which is the total opposite of how they felt at the beginning.

An example of a static character is Don John. Throughout the story he is basically the villian. He tries to ruin Claudio and Hero's marriage, and he never changes his evil ways. Anoter static character in Much Ado About Nothing is Claudio. He is naive and falls instantly in love with Hero. His hopeless ways never change throughout the story.

  7. A dynamic character is one that grows, changes, or evolves in a story. Benedick and Beatrice are examples of dynamic characters in "Much Ado About Nothing". They both change from hating each other to loving each other with the help of Don Pedro. In the beginning of the play Beatrice has nothing but insults to say about Benedick but as the play moves on she finds herself falling for him. At the beginning of the play Benedick swore that he was going to be a bachelor for the rest of his life. But after the party he is bothered by what Beatrice thought of him and realized that he loves her. Both of these characters change their view on each other.

Static characters are characters that do not change. Don John, Don Pedro, and Hero are examples of static characters. Don John is a static character because he is the same evil deceiving man that he was at the beginning of the play. Hero is innocent the whole play even though her reputation was tarnished with Don John's evil plan. The prince Don Pedro continues to be loyal to his knights and tries to make people fall in love with each other through the play. None of these static characters ever changes during the play.

  8. A dynamic character is one that undergoes some sort of growth or change throughout the story. In the play "Much Ado About Nothing", there are several examples of dynamic characters. Beatrice and Benedick are very clearly dynamic. In the beginning of the play, they are very rude and seem to dislike each other. Their conversations consist solely of insults. After some time, they begin to develop feelings for each other. Those feelings eventually turn into love, and by the end of the play, Beatrice and Benedick are happily married. The dynamic characters in this story clearly add a large amount of excitement to the play as a whole.

Static characters are characters that do not grow or undergo any type of change. In "Much Ado About Nothing", Hero, Claudio and Don John are all static characters. Hero falls in love with Claudio almost immediately upon meeting him. Throughout the entire story, Hero is chasing after Claudio's love. She even goes as far as to fake her own death to make him realize his love for her. Claudio is also static. He falls in love with Hero almost instantly as well. From beginning to end, Claudio is head over heels for her, even after Hero is horribly slandered. Don John is consistently dark and evil throughout the play. He is unhappy with his brother, Don Pedro, so he tries to take his unhappiness out on everyone else. He even attempts to ruin Hero's name so that Claudio will refuse to marry her, thus ruining their potential happiness. As the dynamic characters throughout a story are changing, the consistency of the static characters also adds a great deal of depth and interest to the story.

  9. In the movie the characters that changed, changed off of their feelings of love or hate. Beatrice and Benedick were the characters that fit under the category of being dynamic. In the beginning they hated each other and had love but did not what to show it.All there conversations were insults until the end when they began to love and get married by the end of the play.

The movie "Much Ado About Nothing", Claudio, Don John, and Hero all play the role of being static characters. Hero falls deeply in love with Claudio the first time seeing him. The whole movie she acted desperate to make him love her also. Don Pedro is also static because he is an angry person and tried to ruin happiness for his brother. Claudio is static because he loves Hero but thinks she gave her virginity away before he got married to him. But then he finds out it was not her so he took her hand for marriage.

  10. Static characters are one that do not undergo any sort of change during the play. Don John, the illegitimate brother of Don Pedro is a very good example of a static character. This dark, gloomy man remains evil throughout the whole play. With evil intentions always in mind, Don John remains a villain. Unlike his brother, Don Pedro remains benevolent throughout the whole play. His feelings slightly change when he finds out about Hero's violation against Claudio. But the truth is revealed fairly soon. Don Pedro remains kind, loving and brings people together thoughout the play. Claudio and Hero are also static characters because they fall in love with each other at first sight. Claudio's feelings for Hero slightly change due to her violation. But the truth is revealed soon enough and both their feelings for each other remain the same.
A dynamic character is one that goes through some sort of transformation during the play. Benedick and Beatrice are perfect examples of dynamic characters. From the beginning of the play, they project witty insults at each other. They hate each other and seemed to show it. Eventually they secretly fall in love with each other, and marry happily ever after at the end of the play. They go from hating each other to loving each other; turning out to be completely opposite from what they felt towards each other in the beginning.

  11. A static character is defined as a character who does not go through any significant change throughout the course of the plot, in this case, William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Though multiple character's in the movie adaption of this Shalespeare comedy appear to be static, the most obvious is Don John. Don John enters and exits the play as a villain. He conspires to ruin Hero and Claudio's wedding, which is a success at first, but ultimately a failure, seeing as Claudio and Hero get married in the end. Don John conspires by having his follower. Borachio, sleep with Hero's servant, only make it appear it was Hero herself. When the stunt is pulled off, Hero is made to look like the bad person, but when Don John is caught, it is apparent he is the bad guy of the story. He gets thrown in jail, thus leaving the movie just as he entered.

In contrast, dynamic characters are those who go through an influential change over the course of the plot. In "Much Ado About Nothing," Shakespeare molds both Beatrice and Benedick as static characters. They begin the movie complaining of their hate for love, marriage, and each other. Not until they are tricked into hearing rumors and gossip, do they confess their love for each other in the end. They marry, and nobody hears of their dislike of marriage, love, or especially each other, again.

  12. In the play "Much Ado About Nothing" there are both static and dynamic characters. Examples of static characters are Claudio and Don John. At the beginning of the play, Claudio is spoiled and immature. An example of his immaturity is how he seemingly falls in love in a matter of days. He also loses control when he finds out about Hero and he throws a fit. Don John is another static character. Throughout the entire play, he only has one thing on his mind-causing trouble. He tricks Claudio into thinking Hero was with another man. Don John never learns from his mistakes, so he remains the same the entire story.

In the play, Benedick and Beatrice are great example of dyanmic characters. At the beginning of the play, Benedick is a bachelor who enjoys joking around, and he swears he will never marry. He teases Beatrice, and often makes jokes at her expense. However, as the story progresses, he has a change of heart. He learns that he will be truly happy if he finds someone he loves. That person is Beatrice. Beatrice is very similar to Benedick. Like Benedick, Beatrice is not looking for marriage. Her and Benedick exchange witty jokes and verbal attacks. However, Beatrice eventually falls in love with Benedick at the masquerade. The two falling in love is a symbol of how both of these characters changed throughout the story.

  13. Dynamic chararcters are very important in Shakespear plays. The two dynamic characters in Much Ado About Nothing are Beatrice and Benedick. These two started off loving each other, but they did not realize that until later on in the play. Benedick and Beatrice would always do soliloquies to let the audience know that they were in love. They would not realize this until later because they would always banter with one another. These characters started off hating each other, but ended up loving each other. They are dynamic because they went through a change.

Static characters are also important in Shakespear's plays. These characters do not go through a change, but they stay the same. Don John and Don Pedro are great examples of static characters. Don John is sort of a criminal that has a dark view of everyone and the world around him. He will stay this way throughout the whole play. Don Pedro stays kind throughout the entire play. He goes through one slight change, but it is not a perminent change. He becomes upset about Hero cheating on Claudio, but then he goes back to being nice. Don John and Don Pedro are also foils of each other which shows that they have to be static characters. Hero and Claudio are also good examples. They have the same sappy relationship throughout the whole play. Static characters.

  14. In "Much Ado About Nothing" the dynamic characters are Benedick and Beatrice. They are similar in that in the beginning of the play they insult each other and have no intentions of falling in love. However through the course of the play they eventually realize they have feelings for each other. By the end of the play Benedick and Beatrice get married, sealing their roles as dynamic characters.

The static characters in "Much Ado About Nothing" are Claudio and Hero. Both Claudio and Hero fall in love upon first sight of each other. Throughout the play they chase these feelings and do little more.

  16. In "Much Ado About Nothing" there are two kind of charecters, dynamic and static. Dynamic characters are characters that go through a kind of growth or change throughtout the story. The only dynamic characters in "Much Ado About Nothing" were Beterice and Benedick. They both came in to the play as persons who thought there was no one out there for them to wed. When the two met they couldn't stand the sight of each other. Soon enough they secretly fell in love with one another. By the end they confessed there love and married. And by that time you could tell they had transformed into new people making them fit the definition of dynamic characters perfectly.
Static characters are just a boring dynamic character: they are the characters who stay the same as the play goes on. Characters like Claudio and Hero are perfect examples of a static character. They fell in love at first sight like dumb lovers and they stayed dumb lovers tell the end. Now players like Don Pedro and Don John may not have changed, but they caused some movement in the story. Don Pedro was the matchmaker which changed the play, but not him. Don John also put a little action in the play with his evil scams. He made the play what it was but from beginning to end he was just evil and plain. None of these characters evolved like Beterice and Benedick which makes them all static characters.
